CrowdHydrology: Using Citizen Scientists to Collect Hydrologic Data Through Crowdsourcing

Presenter: Tiffany Sprague, Watershed and Stormwater Research Coordinator, University of Minnesota Duluth Natural Resources Institute

Abstract: CrowdHydrology is a crowd-sourced citizen science project where the public texts a national database observed water depth read from a stream or lake staff gauge. Starting in 2017, Duluth was the first city in Minnesota to participate, with 15 gauges currently installed, and more to be installed in 2020. Currently, there are over 800 data observations, with more arriving daily. Not only do gauges provide cost-effective indicators of stream response to weather conditions, they serve to provide the public a sense of place, stewardship and environmental literacy.

Presenter Bio: Tiffany holds a split appointment between MN Sea Grant and the Natural Resources Research Institute, where she melds the science-y and touchy-feely sides of community-based stormwater management. Oh, and she is also a sustainability manager for the University, but let's not get into that. When not being a nerd at work, Tiffany attempts to be a tap dancer, curler, yogi, birder, native gardener and Master Naturalist; she has a goal to camp in every state park in MN; and, spends too many hours making up songs about her cat, Turtle.
